In the past I had a tip about how tai chi can help relieve the symptoms of fibromyalgia and arthritis and now there is more evidence that tai chi can also help to relieve the symptoms of depression in older people. In a study done at UCLA a group of people averaging 70 years old and diagnosed with major depression was assigned to either tai chi or a health education class that included stretching. While the group assigned to the health education class showed significant improvements the tai chi group showed even greater improvements, 94% for the tai chi group compared to 77% for the health education class. Depression is typically very difficult to treat in older people with a fair number of drug side effects and drug interactions. Using tai chi as part of the therapy could possibly help to reduce or eliminate the need for antidepressant medications in older people. For more health…
